Traffic from long tailed keywords (product or service centric) has proven to be more likely to result in conversions than more general keywords. By attaching the name of your city or state to keywords in your meta titles, anchor text, backlinks, PPC ads and other content, you'll be more likely to be found by potential customers from your own area.
Example: If you're targeting the keyword with search engine optimization "carpet cleaning services" and your store is in the Atlanta area, you might want to go with "Carpet Cleaning Services Atlanta". It won’t keep you from being competitive nationally, but it will put you in a position of strength when getting top local listings.
